I have been running to Target and the Dollar Store several
times over the past few days to purchase items for care packages.  I have 1 friend that is serving in the Army
in Afghanistan, and 2 friends that are serving in the Peace Corps in the
Dominican Republic.  I am not brave
enough myself to do either of these things, but I want my friends to know that
I support them and miss them.
My Army friend is actually the husband of a very close
college friend.  She has been amazingly
strong in this whole process; I really admire her strength and their
relationship.  She has sent out several
update emails to friends and family of things that Chris wants/needs as well as
what other people in his unit have requested.
I put together a full box of goodies for them including: pink Peeps
(because what solider wouldn’t love a pink peep?!), gummy bears, wet wipes,
playing cards, dice, water flavoring packets, and a few issues of Cosmo. ;-)
My friends in the Peace Corps are actually a married
couple.  My friend Ashley requested that
I send them an envelope instead of a box because they receive it faster and are
taxed less.  This limited some of the
items that I wanted to send, but I tried to pack as much in there as
possible.  They requested:
paper/notebooks, pens, index cards, and some chocolate.  I really hope the chocolate doesn’t melt on
the trip!
I am not writing this post to brag, but more to get people
to think.  Put yourself in their
shoes…miles from home/friends/family and without a lot of items we use every
day and take for granted.  I’m sure it is
an amazing feeling to receive a card or a package from home.  If you don’t have someone to send a package
to, you can always donate time/money/items to local charities that help our
armed forces or our volunteers overseas.
